Things to know about the Schuco / Hegi Olympia Waldi from 1972
The Olympia Waldi is the mascot for the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich. He was designed by Otl Aicher (1922-1991), the design commissioner for the Summer Olympics in Munich, and was the first ever Olympic mascot. A dachshund was chosen because these dogs possess toughness, agility and resilience. In addition, the dachshund was considered a typical pet of Munich's citizens at the time. Among the creative people around Otl Aicher who were responsible for the overall design of the games was the graphic designer Elena Winschermann, who took over the design area around the souvenirs. In this function, she further developed the "Olympia-Waldi" concept designed by Aicher up to the plush animal version. The design team had previously decided to give the desired mascot a clear shape and form. The colours of the mascot were based on Aicher's colour scheme for the Games, which was based on the HKS colour fan. A dachshund dog named "Cherie von Birkenhof", who was only 84 days old at the time, served as the model.
